“Tulsa: The Fire and the Forgotten” CAST Documentary Program
This is the documentary that was discussed in our January 20 program, “An American Pogrom: the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre”. “Tulsa: The Fire and the Forgotten”, directed by Jonathan Silvers, examines this deadly assault on humanity on the 100th anniversary of the crime. The Memorial Day weekend of 1921 saw one of the most shameful incidents in the history of U.S. race relations, when white rioters destroyed over 35 blocks of Tulsa, Oklahoma's Greenwood District, a prosperous hub of African-American-owned businesses. Moreover, the attack and it's human toll-as many as 300 dead-was covered up for generations. The circumstances of the Tulsa Race Massacre, and the tragedy's long climb into public consciousness, are strikingly recounted here. Narrated by Michel Martin. Run time 120 minutes. Provided by the CAST Senior Center, our Documentary Programs provide an endless variety of interesting subjects in a prerecorded, professional film format. They take us across the country and around the world, experiencing and learning about places and people which we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Our documentaries are entertaining, informative, and inspiring. They offer a unique and powerful form of storytelling that captures your attention and provoke thought and discussion. Scheduled every Tuesday afternoon, unless noted, at 1pm at the CAST Senior Center, our Documentary Programs are free and open to the public.
