Shopping with Laura Ingalls
SHOPPING WITH LAURA INGALLS AT THE HARKIN STORE
On your way to "On the Banks of Plum Creek" at Walnut Grove, on July 15th, stop in at the 1870's Harkin Store and see what Laura and her family would have purchased at the Oleson Mercantile.
The Harkin Store, which would have been open during the time Laura lived in Walnut Grove,
has 40% original merchandise still on the shelves. A costumed tour of the store and story
of the unique bit of history is told. Extra checker boards will be available for you to challenge
your friends and family.
The store is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 4 pm with programs on Sunday
afternoons from 1 to 4 pm. The gift shop is open the same hours as the store and has books,
toys, unique and hand crafted items and 10 cent candy.
The store is located nine miles northwest of New Ulm on Nicollet County Road 21, or the
bottom road, or nine miles east of Fort Ridgely. Nicollet County Road 21 is under construction
so follow the detour signs or call the store when open at 1-507-354-8666, or Nicollet County
Historical Society which operates the store at 1-507-934-2160.
