Harkin Store 1870's Clothing Review
FASHION REVIEW FROM 1870'S AND ON
Bring your lady to the Sunday, July 7th, Harkin Store program from 1 to 4 pm, our program is a clothing review of 1870's and 1880's made by Elizabeth Harkin Russell, Alexander Harkin's daughter. We have Christening Robe, a summer dress and hat, Black Poodle Cloth Cape, 1880-1890 Morning Cape, Black Piano Shawl and more, Purple Wool Crepe Wedding Dress that Elizabeth wore for her wedding on December 19, 1888. Lorna Runck, great grand-daughter of Alexander Harkin will be able to tell you about these items that will be on display.
Alexander Harkin was a farmer and general store operator in the village of West Newton in the 1870's. His store operated until 1901 and then closed with merchandise still on the shelves. Today, you will be able to see and hear about the store 40 % original merchandise still on the shelves. The store hours have changed to 10:00 until 4:00, open on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays.
The program is included with the admission to the store. Our gift shop is restocked with many new items, books, toys, and hand crafted items and 10 cent candy.
The Harkin Store is located nine miles northwest of New Ulm on Nicollet County Road 21, or the bottom road, or nine miles east of Fort Ridgely. Nicollet County Road 21 is under construction so follow the detour signs or call the store when open for directions at 1-507-354-8666.
