German-Bohemian Music in New Ulm
By Dan Groebner
By Dan Groebner
In so many ways, music was part of village life for German Bohemians before many came to Minnesota in the nineteenth century. Village bands in Bohemia, as depicted in historical photographs, closely resemble New Ulm’s Old-Time bands that played the most authentic folk music. German-Bohemian immigrant families, including the Kitzbergers, Meidls, and Hofmeisters, have been instrumental in preserving their ethnic music in another genre, marching and concert bands. Before World War II, these were predominantly military bands attached to the Minnesota National Guard. Dan Groebner will describe how the German-Bohemian musical heritage has been preserved for the last eighty years by the New Ulm Municipal Band.
