CAST/Library Movie Matinee: "The Help"
An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. In early-1960s Jackson, Mississippi, Skeeter (Stone) is a Southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends' lives--and their hometown--upside-down when she decides to interview the Black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent Southern families. Aibileen, Skeeter's best friend's housekeeper, is the first to open up--to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit Black community. Despite Skeeter's lifelong friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories--and it turns out that they have a lot to say. Along the way, unlikely friendships are forged and a new sisterhood emerges, but not before everyone in town has a thing or two to say themselves when they become unwittingly--and unwillingly--caught up in the changing times. About our Movie Matinees: The CAST Senior Center is partnering with the New Ulm Public Library to bring you Movie Matinees. Held in the Meeting Room in the lower level of the New Ulm Public Library, we will present a different movie each Friday afternoon at 1pm. Our movies are free, and everyone is welcome to attend. No preregistration needed. Made possible by the Optimist Club of New Ulm. For 2025, we’re returning to our “Through the Decades” movie theme. We will be showing movies from the Top 100 Movies list of their decade. Beginning with the 1930s in January, through September, plus November. October is reserved for classic monster movies for Halloween and December for Holiday classics. You’re welcome to bring your own refreshments. Free hearing devices compatible with the sound system are available to use. And you don’t have to be a “senior” to attend! See some old favorites and discover some new ones. Join us for a fun afternoon of classic cinema!
